Coaching

 

  • Focus: Coaching, as defined by the International Coaching Federation (ICF), is a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires individuals to maximize their personal and professional potential. Coaches partner with clients to unlock their own insights, ideas, and solutions, rather than offering advice or answers.


  • Relationship: Coaching is non-directive. A coach does not provide the answers but facilitates the client’s process of self-discovery and growth by asking powerful questions, offering reflective listening, and creating a supportive environment for the client to explore their own solutions.


  • Goal: The goal of coaching is to help the client achieve their desired outcomes by clarifying their goals, uncovering barriers, and helping them take intentional actions toward those goals. It’s focused on the client’s own development and self-driven success.


  • Duration: Coaching relationships are typically time-limited, with a specific focus on achieving certain objectives within a set period, such as weeks or months.

Mentoring

 

  • Focus: Mentoring is typically a relationship where the mentor shares their expertise, knowledge, and experiences to guide the mentee through challenges or transitions. The mentor often provides advice, offers insights from their own career, and helps the mentee navigate specific personal or professional situations.


  • Relationship: The relationship tends to be more directive, with the mentor offering solutions, practical advice, and direction based on their experience.


  • Goal: The main goal of mentoring is to provide the mentee with guidance, wisdom, and perspective to help them progress in their career or life.


  • Duration: Mentoring relationships can vary in length but are often more informal and long-term, depending on the mentee's needs.
